My Mother's Barbie
After my mother's passing, I was left as her sole next of kin and all that comes with that. Sifting through all the stuff she left behind, I was struck by the type of stories our things can tell when they're all that's left of us.
My Mother's Barbie creates an alternate reality where my mother's childhood and mine merge. In it the model of Barbie she played with collides with the aesthetics of my childhood in the 90's and 00's.
Barbie I
It was only after my mother's passing that I realized all the questions I never asked her and everything I would never get to know. Our relationship was often very heavy, so these pieces provided me a chance to spend a little more time with her in a more playful way than life did.
Barbie II
In my mourning, Barbie reached through time and connected me to a woman I'd spent my whole life trying to connect with.
"Barbie is all of these women. And all of these women are Barbie."
